MECHANICAL ENGINEER VACANCY

Blue Ocean - Marine Tech Systems (BOMTS) is seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer to contribute to the development of a new autonomous underwater vehicle.

This is an exciting opportunity to join Blue Ocean with the successful applicant playing a key role in the evolution and realisation of our vision to deliver cost effective autonomy to defence clients in the UK and abroad.

About the Role

The Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for design, development, manufacture and testing of automation systems for our new unmanned underwater vehicle.

​The position will likely present opportunities for some domestic and international travel, to support system testing, sea trials, conferences, expos & client meetings (approx. 2-3 weeks per year in total).

This full-time role is based in Plymouth, UK.

Responsibilities

  • Approach design tasks and perform all work with adherence to and participation in company and industry safety policies.

  • Ensure systems are designed to comply with relevant safety and environmental codes.

  • Conduct technical and safety risk assessments, ensuring systems are reliable and safe.

  • Conduct stakeholder interviews to elicit and maintain requirement specifications.

  • Prepare and maintain technical documentation in accordance with company policy.

  • Conceptualise, design, develop/manufacture, test and commission mechanical automation systems.

  • Specify and source sensors, actuators, and other electo-mechanical hardware.

  • Assist in the preparation of, and participate in, design reviews and preparation of reports and customer deliverables.

  • Domestic and international travel to support manufacturing and testing activities.

  • Seek out new development opportunities and build/maintain relationships with key suppliers.

About You

  • You are a curious, self-motivated, and hands-on engineer who is energised by complex problems and the opportunity to innovate. You are comfortable engaging with problems which are not fully defined and take the initiative to build knowledge and define your own problem space.

     

  • You display good time-management and self- discipline such that you meet deadlines unsupervised, and you possess strong communication skills to enable you to co-ordinate well. You will have experience in bringing novel designs to fruition and supporting their simulation, manufacture, testing and installation.

     

  • You have a keen interest in robotics and autonomous systems particularly those in the maritime environment.

Required Experiences & Qualifications

  • Degree or equivalent in relevant subject.

  • Design experience with robotic or other electro- mechanical projects.

  • Demonstrated experience designing and simulating kinematic/robotic assemblies and their actuators, or industrial equipment mechanisation and/or automation.

  • Demonstrated experience with control system design and implementation.

  • Excellent computer and communication skills (both written and verbal).

  • Familiarity with modern (online/cloud) work collaboration platforms and methods (SharePoint, Microsoft Teams).

  • Must be eligible for Defence Security Vetting and Clearance.

  • Have the unrestricted right to work in the UK.

Desirable Experience & Qualifications

  • Qualification in Mechatronic or Robotic Engineering. Mechanical or Electrical Engineering considered with strong demonstrated relevant experience.

  • Experience with new product development, from concept through to manufacture and testing.

  • Knowledge and experience of rapid prototyping techniques including 3D printing is highly desirable

  • Experience with vessel-based or subsea systems.
